Anna Chapman was one of 11 accused Russian secret agents arrested by FBI agents. According to two criminal complaints filed in U.S. District Court in New York, Chapman allegedly met with an FBI official posing as a Russian agent on June 26 to receive, and later deliver, a fraudulent passport to an unnamed individual who she believed was also a Russian agent. “Are you ready for this step?” the undercover agent asked her inside a New York coffee shop “S—, of course,” Chapman allegedly replied.

Chapman is quoted in the complaint repeating back the following instructions: “Okay, tomorrow at 11, I am going to be sitting at one of the benches, she is going to ask me if she saw me in California. I am going to say no, it was in the Hamptons. I will take the documents, tell her to sign. I will hold the journal, this is how she will recognize me.”

She was arrested before the mission was carried out. Chapman appeared in Manhattan federal court on June 28, 2010 with four other alleged spies.

“The evidence here is overwhelming. It is simple. It is strong,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Farbiarz the hearing. “This is a Russian agent!” he said, gesturing dramatically at Chapman. Farbiarz went on to call her a “practiced deceiver”and an “extraordinary agent.”

Chapman’s LinkedIn profile says she earned a masters degree in economics from a Russian university, and worked at Barclays Bank in London from 2004-2005, at a London hedge fund, and most recently as chief executive of PropertyFinder Ltd, a computer software firm. At a court appearance in Manhattan Monday, Chapman was denied bail.

Anna Chapman is a the daughter of a Russian diplomat who at one time worked in Kenya, and received her higher education in Volgograd and Moscow.

She moved to Britain after marrying a Briton whose father was Europe director for Auchan, the French supermarket chain, which operates many stores in Russia.

Anna Chapman did not seek to conceal her Russian identity when she arrived in New York from Moscow in February 2010, saying she wanted to build up a recruitment agency targeting young professionals in both cities. Before that, she said she had lived for five years in the UK, working in the financial sector.

Among dozens of photos posted online is one of Ms Chapman posing with a glass of wine between two men at the Global Technology Symposium at Stanford University in March – an event that cost more than $1,000 to attend.

Steve Fox, who throws upscale matchmaking parties in the city, said she showed up a few times with other Russian women. “She was pretty,” Fox said. “I guess she wanted to meet men, just like all the other women in New York.” About her style, he said, “There were no Lady Gaga outfits on her. It was more classy.”

An acquaintance, David Hantman, owner of a New York real estate company, described Chapman as “pleasant, very professional, friendly.” “There’s nothing too crazy about her that I knew of,” he said.

“Nothing has excited me more in life than the number and level of people I have met here. This place is full of ideas,” she said in Russian. “I’m trying to create a project that would connect two capitals – New York and Moscow – the two most important cities for me in the quest for ideas,” she says.

Asked how someone new to business can meet the right people in New York, she says, “America is a free country, and it’s the easiest place in the world to meet the most successful people. … Here you can go out for dinner with your neighbor and meet a top venture capitalist.”

Authorities say the undercover’s parting words to her had been, “Your colleagues in Moscow, they know you’re doing a good job. So keep it up.”
